Candy Hearts Tutorial
Here is a step-by-step on how I made my personalized candy hearts decor. I originally got the idea from another crafter and decided to make my own. I will describe the step and place the picture directly below. Here goes!
I purchased 6 3/4" by 7 1/2" wooden heart plaques from Michaels and painted them with lightened colors I had on hand to be similar to traditional candy hearts.
I couldn't find a font that I liked to model my letters off of, so I free-hand sketched all of our names out as seen below. (I ended up redoing "heath" and "crystal" after I took this picture in order for the letters to be closer together.) If you have a font you like, you can print the names out and color over them with pencil, using the same mirror transfer technique described below. Or cut the names out on red vinyl with a Cricut/Sillouette/etc.
I then flipped this page onto the opposite page and pressure rubbed the lead onto the opposite page to get the the mirror image of the names to transfer onto the hearts. You can see this here with "crystal".
I then recolored the mirror image of the name so it would transfer well to the heart.
I cut the mirrored names out and taped them to the individual hearts.
I then rubbed to transfer the mirrored names to the hearts. CAUTION: DO NOT RUB TO HARD. YOU WILL INDENT THE WOOD.
I then took a large red Sharpie and traced the names on each heart.
Here are all four hearts after coloring in the letters in red Sharpie.
I then found a wide, red ribbon I liked and attached it to this plastic ring by sewing a loop of the ribbon around the ring. You could also hot glue (as long as you don't have too many hearts making it too heavy) or use staples, as I added a bow over this area and these attachment techniques would be hidden.
I used my hubby's staple gun to attach each heart to the ribbon with several staples.
Then I made a bow with coordinating ribbon to add to the top and hot glued it by the ring.
And viola! The finished product!! I chose to leave the tail longer in case we need to add another name some day. ;)
